Tom Hannan, MA (Cantab), MCILT
Tom Hannan is currently Compensation Manager with Network Rail in Scotland, where he is responsible for administration of the regime compensating train operators for train retimings and diversions caused by engineering work.
Following university, studying engineering and management studies, he started his career with British Rail as a management trainee, gaining experience of railway operations in Scotland and of the shore side of ferry operations at Larne Harbour.
After several years, he moved to the Centre for Transport Studies at Cranfield and carried out transport research work there for seven years, including studies of delays to ro-ro freight movements and of the reliability of inter-city rail services.
He returned to British Rail in 1985, mainly dealing with investment appraisal and business planning in Scotland until 2003, but with secondments for overseas consultancy assignments in Mozambique and Colombia, covering business planning and investment planning issues.
