Ten new buses were officially launched on a local route in Aberdeenshire today, allowing the service to operate with a fully wheelchair accessible timetable. These state-of-the-art, easyACCESS Enviro 300 buses also have the latest "green" environmentally friendly engines which are fitted with Euro 4 engines that meet the current European directive standard and CCTV equipment to ensure maximum passenger and driver safety.
The new buses are now operating on service 307 between Aberdeen, Bucksburn, Blackburn, Kintore and Inverurie. The service operates up to every 15 mins Monday to Saturday and hourly on Sundays.
More than 7 million bus journeys were made with Stagecoach Bluebird within Aberdeen City and Shire in 2007. The new addition to the fleet means that 45 brand new fully accessible low floor buses and coaches have been introduced in the area since April 2006 at a cost of over £6.4 million.
As the latest addition to the Bluebird fleet, these ten buses (which cost the company almost £1.1 million) further demonstrate the company's commitment to improving public transport journey options for Aberdeenshire residents and develop a network which can really compete with the car.
Charlie Mullen, Managing Director of Stagecoach Bluebird said: "As passenger numbers continue to grow on our services, we realise that we need to present travellers with choice that are comparable to the private car. By heavily investing in the Stagecoach Bluebird network and continuing to offer value for money ticket options, we aim to further achieve modal shift. At a time when we are all very aware of the environmental impacts of our lifestyles, we want to ensure that switching to the bus can be a viable and enjoyable option for as many people as possible."
Councillor Kitts-Hayes, Chair of Garioch Area Committee said, "Aberdeenshire Council welcomes the company's introduction of the new state of the art accessible vehicles, which will compliment the new bus stops, bus shelters and raised passenger boarding platforms that have, and are being provided along the Inverurie corridor by the Council. Working in this co-ordinated way will maximise the benefit to existing and new passengers, and will help to achieve the Council's Local Transport Strategy objectives of sustainability and inclusion."
