Poacher Line pride
People involved with the Poacher Line rail service scooped seven top awards out of 15 categories in the Community Rail Awards 2007.
Grantham to Skegness Community Rail Partnership manager Chris Watson was thrilled with the achievements of schemes which he had put forward for awards at the ceremony at Bexhill on Sea.
An art project at Sleaford station undertaken by Sleaford students was given a special commendation in a category for involving young people thanks to publicity work for the project by Laura Roberts, a Year 11 pupil at Kesteven and Sleaford High School.
Artistic pupils from the High School, along with students from Carre's Grammar School and St George's College, painted local scenes on boards at the station that might be seen from a carriage window. The project was also placed third in the Community Art Schemes category.
The Poacher Line Community Rail Partnership, which runs between Nottingham, Grantham, Sleaford and Skegness, stole the show, picking up two first prizes among its seven awards.
First prize was awarded for Lincolnshire County Council's InterConnect integrated bus network in the Local Transport Integration category and Batemans Brewery in Wainfleet was crowned Best Railway Pub 2007 for their support for the popular programme of music trains.
The Yellow Brick Road Project, which has improved pedestrian access between bus and rail stations in Grantham, picked up a second place award, while Kim Cinevas, who works in the ticket office at Sleaford station came third in the Outstanding Railway Staff Contribution category.
And, in a magnanimous gesture, Mr Watson also nominated the tearooms at Crianlarich station in Scotland for Best Station Buffet, and they won!
Chris said: "I visited Crianlarich when I was walking the West Highland Way earlier this year. It was a cold, damp day and I was tired and grumpy, but they made me very welcome so I thought that this gesture was a nice payback".
"It is always nice to win awards and the Poacher Line's successes in the Community Rail Awards 2007 recognise the hard work that partners and projects on the line contribute to making the railways more welcoming, more accessible and more valued by the community they serve".
