John Fender is an Assistant Bus Agencies Officer with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) with responsibility for the Quality Monitoring of contracts secured by the SPT on behalf of the Education Departments of 11 councils in the West of Scotland in addition to the monitoring of Special Education needs contracts for eight of these councils. He is also involved in many other aspects of public transport provision in the West of Scotland.

He trained as an industrial chemist before moving to transport. In 1978 he joined Greater Glasgow PTE as an assistant in the Traffic Research & Development Department and has experience in operations, private hire, engineering and finance. In 1985, when the bus industry was deregulated, he remained with Strathclyde PTE as an Assistant Public Transport Officer.

In 1993 he was appointed as Bus Project Officer with responsiblity for special projects relating to bus operations within the area covered by the former Strathclyde Regional Council and was involved in projects such as the redevelopment of Buchanan Bus Station. He was appointed to his present post following a departmental restructuring due to local government re-organization.

John Fender was for 25 years a part time lecturer in transport subjects at Glasgow's Central College of Commerce, specialising in road transport operations and industrial relations, but is currently taking a rest from lecturing. He is currently a Committee member and Chairman of the Institute of Logistics and Transport's Scottish Region and has designed and maintains the Scottish Region website. Other interests included running half-marathons (used to be full marathons!) raising money for charity and photography (being famous for his "infernal machine!"). He is also interested in cookery and philately and writes articles on stamps for a leading philatelic website.
