"Transport preparations for Glasgow's Commonwealth Games" by George Vincent, Glasgow City Council Technical Services Manager. With completion of the M74 and the Airdrie-Bathgate railway, Glasgow's transport infrastructure is already being improved in advance of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, preparations for which include planning for movement of visitors from and to the city. How are spectators, athletes, officials and stewards are to transfer securely to and from stadia? More immediately, there is the issue of delivering materials for the construction of Games facilities. And what projects are to be the Games' legacy to Glasgow and Scotland? Tea/Corree and biscuits will be provided at this event. |

"How does the Scottish transport system serve our visitors" by David Warnock David Warnock lives in Callander and operates a small consultancy, working mainly in rural development, recreation and outdoor access and cultural and natural interpretation. He previously worked as Development Officer on the Trossachs Trail Tourism Management Programme which was widely recognised as a pioneer of "Green Tourism" and "Integrated Quality Management". David has a degree in Business Studies with Environmental Education. In July 2010 he was appointed to the Board of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. "Mapping Britain's railways" by David Spaven and Julian Holland Britain invented railways, and can also lay claim to being the best-mapped country in the world. The new book by David Spaven and Julian Holland on Mapping Britain's Railways (Times Books, 2011) illustrates the history of Britain's railways through a carefully chosen selection of maps that have never before appeared in a single publication. "Conserving Scotland's Maritime Heritage" by Jim Tildesley, former director, Scottish Maritime Museum Ships unlike buildings and wrecks have no statutory protection, and despite Scotland's prowess as a shipbuilding nation more Scots-built ships are preserved abroad than here. Former director of the Scottish Maritime Museum Jim Tildesley considers the record in conserving the legacy of our sea-going success, and reports the progress being made by museums in the face of adversity and indifference. "The work of Passenger Focus" by Anthony Smith, Chief Executive, Passenger Focus Passenger Focus is the independent consumer watchdog for Britain's rail passengers and England's bus, coach and tram passengers. Using research - in particular the rail National Passenger Survey and Bus Passenger survey - to drive change, Passenger Focus seeks to make a difference for passengers. "The CHRONOS project" by Ranald Robertson, HITRANS Devised by Nexus Alpha with JLM Consulting, the solar-powered CHRONOS system enables customer information to be displayed cost-effectively in locations which lack the normal cabling infrastructure. Rail station displays at seven locations on the Far North Line meet the design brief developed through discussion with ScotRail and HITRANS, and funding support has come also from the Technology Strategy Board. Rolled out to several bus stations, the system has an automated speech facility for the visually impaired. Note: There is no charge for this event and no booking required. |
